My name is Sarah Brooks and I am a hide tanner, making bark-tanned leathers and furs by hand using traditional methods and natural materials.
I tanned my first deer hide in Scotland the natural way in 2017, and I’ve been tanning hides ever since. I have made leather from deer, elk, javelina, sheep, cow, goat, and rabbit using the ancestral methods of bark tanning and smoke tanning (also known as brain tanning or fat tanning).
I am grateful to have studied with skilled tanning and leatherworking mentors such as Matt Richards of Traditional Tanners, Woniya Thibeault of Buckskin Revolution, Digger Crist, Maya Beth, Natalie Bartlett of Folkways School, Coleen Butler of Close to the Skin, and Peter Ananin of Woodland Tannery.
